Arizona DiamondBacks Wins But At What Cost

Pavin Smith

Disaster happened today for the Diamondbacks despite earning a much needed win.  Pitcher Zach Davies had to leave in the 4th inning after a ball came careening toward him and hit him in the left leg.  The injury has been labeled as a lower leg contusion so far and no further information has been released.  Drew Ellis filled in for Josh Rojas this game, he attempted one at bat and then felt discomfort in his side so he was unable to finish this game.    Arizona is starting to get hit by the injury bug losing Carson Kelly earlier in the season, then John Rojas, Davies, and now Ellis, fans must be wondering now how much more they can take before the product starts declining.

Today’s game started off as a home run hitting contest between the Royals and Dbacks.  Kansas City hit 3 home runs in the first inning before the inning got retired, and then Arizona responded with two more homeruns.  Struggling Pavin Smith had a great game today and has recently been returning to normal to fans relief, with one hit 2 walks, 2 runs, and 2 RBI’s this is what Pavin Smith knows he can do any day of the week.  Dalton Varsho has to be one of the most unique catchers in baseball, the fact that he is a catcher that can bat first in the lineup is incredible but he’s also the designated hitter on his off days.  The way this team played offensively after Davies’ worst start of the season was inspiring and the way they continued playing after his injury proves that this team can compete any given day for a wildcard spot.  National media needs to start paying attention to Thomas, this rookie sensation is phenomenal defensively, at least once a game he makes a game saving catch.  Today he back pedalled in center field and leaped at the perfect time to save a run from coming in.

The Diamondbacks were able to pitch themselves out of a couple jams this game.  Twice the bases were loaded by Kansas City with no damage occurring and the Royals left 10 batters total on base.  Normally you can not expect to win this way but when your starter goes down in the 4th inning you aim to win any way you can.  The relief pitching is still rough for Arizona but it appears Luvello is starting to find the people he feels he can and can not trust.

With a final score of 9-5, the Diamondbacks will have one more game against the Royals before facing the Dodgers.  If Arizona can win the next game that will put them over .500 again and hopefully carry some momentum as LA comes to town.  Despite losing 4 in a row to the Dodgers earlier this month, Arizona fans should not expect to get swept again.  3 of the 4 games were very winnable and Arizona’s bats are now hotter than before, Arizona could realistically win this upcoming series and continue heating up.
