Diamondbacks Get Back to Winning Ways with 2 in Row against Giants

Today’s pitching battle between Zach Gallen of the Diamondbacks and the San Francisco Giants Anthony Desclafani did not disappoint.  Gallen pitched 7.2 innings allowing 2 earned runs, had 6 strikeouts, and allowed 5 hits.  Anthony pitched 5 innings before getting an unknown injury at the time this article is being written.  Anthony left 3 Diamondbacks on base but allowed no runs until relief pitcher Scott Alexander came in, making Desclafani allow 3 runs and Alexander allow his own run.  Both teams’ starting pitchers put their team in a great position to win but the Diamondbacks hitting proved to be more efficient today.

The Diamondbacks won today 7-2 making the series 2-1 with Arizona ahead. The Dbacks through 40 games are now 4 games above .500 at 22-18 and still in second place behind the Dodgers.  The energy at Chase Field was electric today as over 25,000 fans showed up to cheer on their Arizona Diamondbacks.  Looks like fans are starting to come around on this young speedy team.

The Diamondbacks speed definitely killed the Giants today.  Jose Hererra earned the first run after stealing home on a wild pitch.  Ketel Marte in the 8th inning was able to steal from second base to home on a wild pitch.  Dominic Fletcher was able to turn a triple and set his team up for a run.

Dominic Fletcher is continuing his phenomenal run with the Diamondbacks.  Today he recorded another multi-hit game with another home run and 5 RBI’s making his season total with 10 RBI’s and a batting average of .447.  It looks like Fletcher will stay in the starting lineup for the foreseeable future as Jake McCarthy is struggling in Reno to hit the ball still.  When Torrey Luvello was asked about Fletchers he said “I’ve been telling you guys for a month our young players need to come up here and contribute right away, that’s the mindset.” No one since coming up from the minors has made more of an impact than Fletcher.

Fletcher not only had the hot bat today but he also made the defensive play of the game.  In the first inning Fletcher, running toward the warning track, caught the ball over his shoulder and threw the ball to first to earn a double play, potentially saving extra runs in the first inning.

Tomorrow the Arizona Diamondbacks will finish their 4 game series against San Francisco.  The game tomorrow will feature Brandon Pfaadt who may be pitching to stay in the starting rotation for the future tomorrow.  With Zach Greinke returning to the lineup soon, this most likely means one of the three rookie pitchers has to return to the minor leagues and more than likely that will be Pfaadt or Ryne Nelson.
